The 3 bedroom house was built in the Early 20th century using construction methods typical of the era, the footprint is 100m², the walls are solid brick, with concrete floors and double glazed windows.
The house was originally heated by an old oil boiler serving a hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard and utilising the existing radiators.
The lower operating temperatures of the heat pump posed a couple of problems as it left some of the radiators short of duty; this was resolved simply be purchasing new ones which met the heat demand of each room.
The Panasonic 9kw T Cap heat pump system was installed at the rear of the utility room which was where a new 180 litre heat pump unvented cylinder was fitted.
Prior to the installation of the heat pump, Paul spent £2,000 on oil heating per annum. After the install, Paul’s heating cost has been reduced to £1,100 per annum.
By running the system continuously in the heating season and using the built in weather compensation features, Paul noted “the house is warm day and night as I only set back the night time temperature 2 degree’s, I leave the water on constant as well”.
The system has been a real success story despite the complications of an older style property with a far from ideal set up, solid walls, undersized pipework and radiators.
The RHI payment over 7 years will be £9,100.
